Identifying objectives for a learning space management system with value-focused thinking

2017

A classroom with a blackboard and some rows of desks is obsolete in special education. Depending on the needs, some students may need more tactile and inspiring surroundings with various pedagogical accessories while others benefit from a simplified environment without unnecessary stimuli. This understanding is applied to a new Finnish special education school building with open and adaptable learning spaces. We have joined the initiative creation process by developing software support for these new spaces in the form of a learning space management system. Participatory design and value-focused thinking were implemented to elicit the actual values of all the stakeholders involved and transf…

Hardware/Software Implementation of Image Processing Systems Based on ARM Processor

2020

International audience; In this paper we present a hardware/software platform for real-time image processing. We start with the creation of the hardware part based on the ARM processor (PS) with various drivers (PL) for reading, recording and displaying images. Using the SDK tool (Software Development Kit), we add software parts for the realization of some basic image processing algorithms. We use the Xilinx-VIVADO2016 tool for the proposed system design and we use the rapid development board (Xilinx-ZedBoard) for practical implementations. To realize the principle of codesign, we add hardware IPs (RTL level) for the implementation of the same image processing algorithms. To avoid the detai…

Testing physiologic monitor alarm customization software to reduce alarm rates and improve nurses’ experience of alarms in a medical intensive care u…

2018

BACKGROUND:Clinicians in intensive care units experience alarm fatigue related to frequent false and non-actionable alarms produced by physiologic monitors. To reduce non-actionable alarms, alarm settings may need to be customized for individual patients; however, nurses may not customize alarms because of competing demands and alarm fatigue. OBJECTIVE:To examine the effectiveness and acceptance of physiologic monitor software to support customization of alarms. METHODS:This pre/post intervention study was conducted in a 56-bed medical intensive care unit. IntelliVue® Alarm Advisor customization support software for alarm limit violations was installed on all monitors and education on its u…

Revised periodic boundary conditions: Fundamentals, electrostatics, and the tight-binding approximation

2011

Many nanostructures today are low-dimensional and flimsy, and therefore get easily distorted. Distortion-induced symmetry-breaking makes conventional, translation-periodic simulations invalid, which has triggered developments for new methods. Revised periodic boundary conditions (RPBC) is a simple method that enables simulations of complex material distortions, either classically or quantum-mechanically. The mathematical details of this easy-to-implement approach, however, have not been discussed before. Therefore, in this paper we summarize the underlying theory, present the practical details of RPBC, especially related to a non-orthogonal tight-binding formulation, discuss selected featur…

On Hagelbarger’s and Shannon’s matching pennies playing machines

2020

Abstract In the 1950s, Hagelbarger’s Sequence Extrapolating Robot (SEER) and Shannon’s Mind-Reading Machine (MRM) were the state-of-the-art research results in playing the well-known “matching pennies” game. In our research we perform a software implementation for both machines in order to test the common statement that MRM, even simpler, beats SEER. Also, we propose a simple contextual predictor (SCP) and use it to compete with SEER and MRM. As expected, experimental results proves the claimed MRM superiority over SEER and even the SCP’s superiority over both SEER and MRM. At the end, we draw some conclusions and propose further research ideas, like the use of mixing models methods and the…

Introducing libeemd: a program package for performing the ensemble empirical mode decomposition

2016

The ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) and its complete variant (CEEMDAN) are adaptive, noise-assisted data analysis methods that improve on the ordinary empirical mode decomposition (EMD). All these methods decompose possibly nonlinear and/or nonstationary time series data into a finite amount of components separated by instantaneous frequencies. This decomposition provides a powerful method to look into the different processes behind a given time series data, and provides a way to separate short time-scale events from a general trend. We present a free software implementation of EMD, EEMD and CEEMDAN and give an overview of the EMD methodology and the algorithms used in the deco…

Prediction of Specific TCR-Peptide Binding From Large Dictionaries of TCR-Peptide Pairs

2019

Abstract The T cell repertoire is composed of T cell receptors (TCR) selected by their cognate MHC-peptides and naive TCR that do not bind known peptides. While the task of distinguishing a peptide-binding TCR from a naive TCR unlikely to bind any peptide can be performed using sequence motifs, distinguishing between TCRs binding different peptides requires more advanced methods. Such a prediction is the key for using TCR repertoires as disease-specific biomarkers. We here used large scale TCR-peptide dictionaries with state-of-the-art natural language processing (NLP) methods to produce ERGO (pEptide tcR matchinG predictiOn), a highly specific classifier to predict which TCR binds to which…
